With the development of Nobel-prize winning ionization methods (MALDI and ESI), mass spectrometry has become an indispensable tool for detection and characterization of biomolecules, such as proteins and DNA fragments. Electron capture dissociation (ECD) and electron transfer dissociation (ETD) are two important tandem mass spectrometry methods for protein sequencing, detection and characterization of post-translational modifications of proteins.
The UPPSALA conference (UPPCON) was first organized in 2003 by Professor Roman A. Zubarev, a co-founder of the ECD method, on a boat trip between Stockholm (Sweden) & Helsinki (Finland) and then followed by Professor Patrick Langridge-Smith at Scotland (UK) and Professor David Goodlett at Seattle (USA). This annual conference has an objective to provide a meeting place for scientists to publish their first-hand results and to exchange their views and ideas on the scientific development of the electron capture and electron transfer dissociation mass spectrometry.
Hosting the UPPCON IV in Hong Kong facilitates scientists and graduate students in Hong Kong and in other Asian countries to interact with the world leading scientists in mass spectrometry. Through conference seminars and informal scientific discussion, it is hoped that more collaborative research would be established.
